In June 2016 I was lucky enough to have seen The Stone Rose’s live at the Manchester Etihad stadium. Walking into the area was a sight to see in itself, Mancunians and fans from across the country confidently (possibly drunkenly) queuing for the gig in their lemon bucket hats and macs, imitating their idol Ian Brown.
The band started with my favourite song ‘ I want to be adored’ that of which they’re famously known for opening their shows with, I Wanna Be Adored’s opening bass notes thunder in and the crowd is instantly hollering the melody, setting off coloured flairs that drift across the crowd. It’s probably this fizzing atmosphere that makes Roses shows so infectious an experience. Elephant Stone and Sally Cinnamon are quick out of the blocks too, Mersey Paradise is delivered just as early.
Five years after the Stone Roses reunion there are only two new songs in the bag, but the appetite to see them does not wane with an arena filled with fans anticipating their glorious comeback since performing at Heaton park in 2012. Their setlist was built around classic anthems. Still, 60,000 people a day – tonight, then Friday through to Sunday – remain happy with that nostalgic deal.
My top 5 songs:
- I wanna be adored
- Shoot you down
- Fools gold
- Made of stone
